SUMMARY:Foraging on the Farm ------ Rain or Shine
DESCRIPTION:Foraging on the Farm \nSunday\, September 29\, 1-3 pm Rain of Shine \nRegistration required; fee $25 (children under 12 free)   \n  \nCome learn how to start your wild plant and mushroom foraging journey in Connecticut\, safely and sustainably. Led by Amy Demers\, this two-hour-long class will cover wild plant and mushroom identification\, toxic and deadly species to avoid\, and how to prepare wild edibles. \nClass will consist of a lecture portion where you will learn plant and mushroom identification\, sustainability\, and uses. We will then go out on a walk on the Dudley Farm property\, where we will practice plant and mushroom ID out in the field. \nThis class will be $25 per person. 10% of ticket sales will go towards a donation to the Dudley Foundation. To sign up for the class\, email shroomsofct@gmail.com with the full name of all participants. \n \nPresenter: \nAmy Demers is a Doctor of Physical Therapy who started Connecticut Foraging Club in 2021\, when there were no free foraging clubs in the state. The club offers monthly free foraging walks throughout CT\, as well as foraging classes\, where participants learn how to identify and utilize seasonal edible and medicinal plants and mushrooms \nAmy foraged for berries and field garlic as a child\, but became interested in mushroom foraging after listening to a talk by Paul Stamets in 2019 on the medicinal benefits of mushrooms. She has since learned how to forage for a variety of wild mushrooms\, including maitake\, chicken of the woods\, oyster mushrooms\, lion’s mane\, chanterelles\, honey mushrooms\, wine caps\, morels\, chaga\, hemlock reishi\, and turkey tails. Amy loves the diversity of flavors in wild mushrooms. She also makes her own medicinal mushroom teas and tinctures to boost her immune system and improve overall health. \nYou can connect with Amy and learn more about CT Foraging Club on Instagram @ct_foraging_club or on Facebook at Connecticut Foraging Club. You can also join the CT Foraging Club email list by emailing shroomsofct@gmail.com to receive information on upcoming foraging walks and classes.

SUMMARY:Atlatl and Stone Projectile Point Making Demonstrations
DESCRIPTION:For many thousands of years\, before the introduction of the bow and arrow 2\,000 years ago\, the primary weapon of the Indigenous people of Southern New England was the atlatl; a short thin five to six foot spear tipped with a stone projectile point and thrown using a throwing stick. Come see a demonstration using the atlatl by State Historic Preservation Office staff  archaeologist Cory Atkinson. \nEver wonder how Indigenous people made pints for their arrows\, spears\, and atlatls? Flint knappers (a person who makes stone projectile points) Anthony Gambardella and Mike Bradshaw will be demonstrating a skill that Indigenous people utilized for 14\,000 years. \nThe Dudley Farm and the Quinnipiac Dawnland Museum are excited to host these three experts on Indigenous life in Connecticut. While here\, tour the Dudley Farm grounds\, the Quinnipiac Dawnland Museum\, and enjoy the Dudley Farm Market.

They also throw in an impressive collection of original tunes they’ve written over the years. \nThe Dudley Farm String Band has played in venues all around the Connecticut shoreline and New England\, including: The Podunk Bluegrass  Festival\, St. John’s Bluegrass Festival\, The International Festival of Arts & Ideas in New Haven\, and The Durham Fair. But their favorite places to play are right here in Guilford.

SUMMARY:Poets and Bards Down On The Farm
DESCRIPTION:Gather at the Dudley Farm to join Guilford Poet Laureates Gordy Whiteman and Mark McGuire-Schwartz\, actor Norman Marshall\, and musician Joe Flood for poems and songs of rural life. We will also hear from and honor the winners of the Guilford High School Poetry Contest. \nPresenters:\nSongwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joe Flood has traveled a long musical road. He worked the streets of Paris with the Lost Wandering Blues and Jazz Band\, written songs with Levon Helm of The Band\, won a Gold Record for his work with Blues Traveler\, and had on stage and studio encounters with such giants of American music as Pinetop Perkins\, Dr. John\, Allen Toussaint\, and John Sebastian. His 2015 release\, “Songs From the Bend in the River” (Jungle Curry Records) is a tribute to three 19th Century songwriters from Middletown\, Connecticut where Flood grew up. His latest album\, “All Roads Lead to the Blues\,” new original songs exploring blues forms and themes and their connections to Afro-Cuban\, gospel\, rock ’n’ roll\, and country music\, was released in October of 2021. \nNorman Marshall is a veteran of 55 years as a professional actor. He has participated in more than three hundred productions in New York and Hollywood — stage\, film\, television and radio — as actor\, producer or director. Marshall has shared the stage and screen with such notable performers as F. Murray Abraham\, Raul Julia\, Moses Gunn\, Bette Midler\, Peter Reigert\, Burt Reynolds\, Telly Savalas\, Barbara Streisand and Harvey Fierstein. He is Co-President of the Guilford Poets Guild with Gwen Gunn. \nGordy Whiteman was born in Guilford in 1929. He is a member of the Guilford Poets Guild. Whiteman is the author of two volumes of poetry: Whitfield Crossing and Home Town Guilford. He is a founding member of The Connecticut Coalition of Poets Laureate and served as Guilford’s Poet Laureate for the last ten years. If he can keep his short-term memory intact\, he hopes to complete a third book of poems sometime soon.
