A CALL TO ARMS IN NORTH GUILFORD 1775
To honor Veterans Day and America 250, join a guided tour of the North Guilford (“Old North”) Cemetery on November 8 at 1:30. It is the oldest cemetery in Guilford and the final resting place for many veterans, including many Dudleys.
In the early Spring of 1775 North Guilford was very aware of the unrest 150 miles away in Boston, but there was farming to be done. Sugaring season was over, farming tools needed to be repaired and sharpened, and ploughing for the spring crops had started. Most had heard about Patrick Henry’s declaration, “Give me liberty or give me death!”. North Guilford heard the call.
By horse or by foot, many Guilfordites traveled the 150 miles to Lexington to join the fight. Buried in the North Guilford Cemetery are 9 of those Patriots from North Guilford:
